Draft Plan Bay Area 2050+: Building a Better Future for All

ree

After more than two years of public collaboration and technical analysis, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) have released the Draft Plan Bay Area 2050+ — a long-range plan designed to guide growth, equity, and investment across the Bay Area’s nine counties and 101 cities.

This ambitious plan envisions a Bay Area that is affordable, connected, diverse, healthy, and vibrant for everyone by 2050. It includes 35 actionable strategies that aim to:

  • Expand access to affordable housing

  • Reduce commute times and improve public transit

  • Strengthen climate resilience and protect natural areas

  • Support a strong regional economy

  • Create safer and more inclusive communities

A Vision for a Connected Bay Area

One of the most innovative aspects of this plan cycle is Transit 2050+, a historic initiative that reimagines the future of Bay Area public transportation. This effort brings together transit agencies across the region to create a more reliable, coordinated, and sustainable system for all residents.

Why This Matters

As housing prices rise and climate risks increase, this plan represents a blueprint for how the Bay Area can thrive while protecting its people and the environment. It connects transportation, housing, economy, and the environment under one shared regional vision.
